What to Expect in the Second Trimester

YOU MADE IT!  Welcome to the second trimester.

You can now breathe a collective sigh of relief because you have made it through the often confusing first trimester of pregnancy. You might notice that the undesirable side effects of pregnancy such as morning sickness and fatigue are starting to fade away – and you might be noticing A BABY BUMP! How exciting is that? If you are superstitious, you have probably been waiting to buy maternity clothes, and can now go shopping happily to facilitate your rounding belly. Yes, the second trimester of pregnancy brings about a lot of changes – and many women finally start feeling excited about their pregnancy now that the risks of miscarriage drop off substantially.

The second trimester officially begins at the 14 week mark and ends at the 26 week mark. During this time, your baby will experience substantial growth and development and you will begin to start feeling fetal movement, which is one of the most amazing feelings of pregnancy. While your baby is still relatively small, he or she will start to function like a ‘real’ baby learning how to swallow amniotic fluid and move his or her body parts. Sexual body parts, bones and the senses of hearing, smell and taste are developing now as well – and you can finally start having real heart to heart conversations with your baby.

Another exciting part of the second trimester is that you will reach the halfway mark of your pregnancy – at approximately 20 weeks. For most first time moms, this is when you will start feeling the first flutters of movements that will prove to you once and for all that your pregnancy is real! In fact, at around 23 weeks, your baby can hear so well that they may jump or jolt in response to loud noises around you. Hair is also developing during this time and the skinny frame of your baby will start to accumulate the adorable rolls of fat that will make them a cuddly ball of cuteness come delivery day.

For most women, the second trimester is a happy time. You won’t be so big that you feel cumbersome, and yet the world will be able to share in your prenatal bliss. Additionally, since hormones begin to settle slightly, you will have more energy to get things done, will likely not feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster and can finally have fun planning for your baby.

Of course, the second trimester is often the first time that moms are given the once in a lifetime chance to ‘see’ their baby through the technology of ultrasound. Most often, your first ultrasound will be scheduled between the 16th and 22nd week of pregnancy (depending on your health and your doctor’s protocol) and you will get to leave the physicians office with an actual picture of your baby.

For many moms – the second trimester is the best phase of pregnancy and is often dubbed the ‘springtime’ of pregnancy. Not only is your body in full bloom, but your baby is as well. Take plenty of time during this part of your pregnancy to enjoy your life and make sure that you take care of yourself emotionally and physically. After all, you are glowing now – from the inside out.

    Hello All,
I have had a difficult time with my fist trimester. I welcome the 2nd trimester. I’m very moody. The morning sickness is better. But I have pushed my partner away and I don’t understand why. I don’t want him to miss the baby movements, the baby growth. I know he wants to be there and be supportive. Has anyone experienced this and how long does it take to feel normal again.

Hi everyone. I’m 14 weeks today. We could see the gender at our 12w6d scan (she’s a girl). It is certainly possible for foetal specialists to tell the gender from 12 weeks. I have had a rough first trimester; so tired I feel like I’m going to faint if I stand or sit too much. I still don’t feel any better and actually feel more nauseous. Really looking forward to feeling more normal!

  8. Annie

April, our pregnancies are of similar age and I’m a second time mom. Just relax and watch the days go buy without leaving out your doctor’s appointment and vitamins. All will go well dear.

  23. Sahar

Hello. This is my first pregnancy. At 12 week i went for sono. Me and my husband were so happy that time but dr made us so sad. He said it is a great chance for your baby to be dandy walker. We dont know what to do. We are only sad and waiting to be more sure in next weeks. Please pray for us. This is very bad and confusing situation. Please just pray. Thanks.

  24. Sassy

Amanda I found out what I’m having at 16 weeks and 2 days. It was clear as day.

The view baby from underneath its bum. As if it is sitting on camera
The differnt genders look like this:
    Girl: three white lines
    Boy: 1 white triangle

Because I google searched images of both before I went I could tell before the sonographer even told me. So I knew it was correct.

    Best feeling ever

    Good luck x

And I’m baking cookies again as a thank you to my partner for all the massages and cool towels for headaches and all times he’s cooked dinner, etc. In any case we’re both excited that our family is growing!

  36. Rachael

Hello! I’m 25, and currently 14 weeks and 2 days pregnant with my first baby, I have suffered with absolutely terrible morning sickness that started from week 4 right upto last week! I was sick all day and throughout the night almost every single day, I can’t explain how incredible I feel now so thankful it’s finally gone! I have lost over a stone in weight and felt crap! One day around the beginning if week 13 I woke up and it had honestly just disappeared, I can stand most smells now and my appetite is back with a vengeance, if you are still suffering please hold on! It will eventually stop and you will start to get the ‘omg you’re glowing’ compliments and less of ‘your skin is actually grey… Are you sure you’re ok?!’

    Keep going! Power through xxx

  37. Julie Elliott

    Hi everyone,
Today I’ve reached 18 weeks. My fiancée and I are so excited. I had a brain bleed (Stroke) in 2008 and was very very poorly. To be in this position now is a dream come true for us both. My left side is very weak, I don’t use my left hand much which makes me a little nervous but many folk have told me how my baby will adapt to me. If you have any tips to advise me of, please let me know. I’m not going to let this bother me or our little baby. X

  38. Nicole

Hi everyone! I’m 21 weeks and 1 day today. This is my second pregnancy and I have a 3 year old daughter. Feeling baby move is still the most amazing feeling ever! Good luck and blessings to all! I’m halfway done!❤❤❤

I’m 14 weeks pregnant. My second pregnancy. First was twins. Only one this time. Worried about my age and already having twins. Hope all will be ok. Other than that very exciting. Oh my twins are 8 and I’m 38.

  40. Kate

Hi everyone, I am so excited to make it to the second trimester at 14 weeks today. I can’t say I feel this energy or glow as I feel extrely exhausted constantly. I can barely get up the stair and I struggle to do normal everyday tasks as I’m soooo tired. But after my 12 week scan showing an anomalies in the nutual translucency and waiting 2 weeks for our harmony results I almost appreciate these feelings……happily we got the all clear from the results and I can now look forward to our healthy little bundle. We find out the gender on the 27th feb! Too much excitement!!! As awful as I feel, I see it as my bubs just showing me he/she is there until they can bump and kick me a hello! 😀

  41. Natalie

hey ladies, I’m 14 weeks pregnant with my 3rd and had an ok time of it so far 😄 loving this app and reading everyone else’s experiences. Just waiting for my bump to show and feeling him/her move. Also got my gender scan 22nd February I can’t wait 😄 good luck to you all 💙💗👶

  42. Amy

First pregnancy and I am 14 weeks today. I’m about 150 pounds and 4foot 10 inches. I lost like 90 pounds before becoming pregnant and then gained about 20 back just before becoming pregnant. And no sign of a baby bump yet…. When will the bump come 😉

  43. Bre

  45. Patrice

Hi this is my first pregnancy an I am 14 weeks. Nervous about planning and buying things for the baby. When have you (asking bloggers) taken a deep breath and felt it is ok to prepare the nursery and maybe but some things for the baby?

  46. Jemmat

I have HG so definitely don’t feel glowing. But I am so happy to see another week drop off. Only 26 weeks to go. Which isn’t long at all. This is my second pregnancy and so different from my first. I also keep telling myself after Xmas and New year I’ll be half way through! I’m just waiting anxiously on those flutters and pops of movement.

  47. Zainab

this is my first pregnancy and I’m 14 weeks pregnant and I’m so excited to know the gender ❤️

  48. LoriKauffman

This is my 7th pregnancy losing my last 2 after finding out I was pregnant. I am exactly 14 weeks and had a lot of nausea but no vomiting. I was very happy for that. I had a ultrasound when I was 13 weeks and 2 days pregnant to test for down syndrome. Everything looks good and it looks as if we are having a boy. We have been trying for one and hope and pray it is correct I get another ultrasound Jan 5. Can’t wait. This is my last pregnancy and am so lucky we made it this far with all the stress of other things before conception. Good luck to all the parents to be.❤❤❤😄😄😄

  49. kerrie k

Today i make 14 weeks and I’m super excited. I am a first time mom and kind of clueless at times so this app is a great help. I can’t wait for 16 weeks so i can find out the gender of the baby

  50. Dana

I keep being told that the second trimester is the best, but that’s not true for everyone, and I wish that was acknowledged because I was not prepared for how awful I’d feel. 🙁

I don’t have HG but I’m still suffering with nausea and occasional vomiting, and major food aversions that are making it difficult to eat a balanced diet. If anything, I feel so much more drained now than I did in my first trimester, which is really sad when everyone keeps telling me how great the 2nd trimester is.

On the plus side, I can’t wait to feel movements (although with an anterior placenta that will be difficult), and I’m loving my new baby bump, even if I do just look fat to other people!

  51. Jessica

So I’m in my second trimester 15 weeks my first pregnancy. And I can say I’ve had the worst time. I was sick my whole first trimester. And now I’m dealing with constipation and hemmroids. Very uncomfortable especially at work. I’m happy to be pregnant just wish I was enjoying it way more!!

  52. Shuntell

Hey guys, I am excited about my 2nd trimester! I was soooo tired during 1st trimester. This is my 2nd pregnancy and it is so different from my first which was a breeze, only headaches and some heartburn. I believe I am either 14or15 wks still not accurate, but due to some minor complications I now get ultrasounds every month and got to see the sex of my baby just by chance this week… It’s a boy 🙂

  53. Victoria

Hello ladies, I’m 14w and 2d pregnant. I’m so excited for my second trimester to start. The beginning was HORRIBLE from the nonstop crying, throwing up, not eating right, constipation, always tired. I definitely see I few changes. My mood is a lot better, I’m eating a lot more which is great! At 1O weeks I did the blood draw to see if the baby had down syndrome along with the gender.. thank God it came back negative and were expecting a baby boy.. My husband and I couldn’t be anymore excited for our son to be here with us. We came to a decision that our son will be named Nathaniel Christian. Nathaniel meaning gift from God because I truly believe he’s our blessing we have always wanted. 😊

  54. Jan

    Hey fellow Moms to be
I am 13 weeks pregnant with my First Baby. I am very excited now than i have been my whole pregnancy, when i found out i became worried and stressed about everything like what i eat, how i sleep, cautious about others bumping into me but then i started relaxing abit and actually enjoying the fact that im creating a little human that i can help mold into a beautiful caring person for the future to enjoy. Fingers crossed on a girl but wouldn’t be disappointed with a boy 🙂 . Oh yes and congratulations to all you Mothers to be.

  55. Ina

    hello mommys to be 🙂
I’m 15w and for the first time pregnant. feeling pretty well so far. In the first trimester I suffered from a slight nausea, and felt so tired. Some symptoms i am still having: some pimples (not acne), heartburn, dizziness, tiredness, increased urination, constipation. I also had the stomach flu last week. It was really bad, i was vomiting a lot and had diarrhea for several days.
Can’t wait to find out what gender it is!!! So exciting 😀

  56. Sheyanne

I am 17 weeks & 5 days pregnant with my first baby. My second trimester has been a breeze. My appetite is amazing, (a lot better than before I got pregnant) I’ve gained 10 lbs which makes me 130lbs & I’m getting more excited each month. My partner and I aren’t ready to find out what we’re having just yet. He works so we’ll find out together on his off day. In the meantime, I’ll go visit my doctor just to make sure everything is just how it’s supposed to be! 🙂 Love this app ♡

  57. Adri

I am currently 13w and 2d. Pregnant, by the time I get my first ultrasound I’ll be 15w and 5d my doctors office allows you to see the gender at 16w-20w but could you still see the gender at 15w and 5d?

This is my first pregnancy and I’m loving every moment of it Except my daily outbursts over little things towards my partner :O . Other than that baby is coming along just fine 🙂 .

Week 14 and I have just noticed my extreme nausea slowly going away. But… It’s making room for general weakness passing out. I’m constantly lightheaded. Had my blood test done, heart trace and blood pressure checked. All seems to be ok, but have to be very slow and careful not to get myself tired:( I really hope all these bad symptoms go away soon so I get to enjoy my first pregnancy. The first trimester was literally a painful nightmare. Going to my second scan tomorrow! Can’t wait to see my baby again:D

I love these little blogs and have gotten to the point I cannot wait for the daily ones anymore so I have started going though the pages to read on any topic I pass and find relevant or interesting. This one in particular got me really excited again especially just after reading the page before it about nesting. Now with these two I am getting off of here for the time being to clean my bathroom and make sure my kitchen is as clean as I left it the night before. Painting the baby room as soon as I get christmas out of here aka Monday. The earliest day I could get my mom over to ‘enjoy the tree and watch christmas movies’ the moment she leaves that tree is GONE! So excited! 20 w 5 d with our first.

As a new father ( feels great to say that) this app is a tremendous aid in helping me understand what’s going on inside her body as well as helping me deal with her CRAZINESS aka hormones.
